July 18th is the opening day at Del Mar Race Track. It has become the West Coast’s Derby Day and Ascot rolled into one. Why? It is known as “Hat Day” or rather “The One and Only Truly Fabulous Hats Contest”. I have been busy designing hats for my clients to wear at at Del Mar’s Opening Day.
Hat Day has been an Opening Day event since 1995. The hats are judged in three categories: Best Fresh Flowers,Best Racing Theme and Funniest/Most Outrageous.
This millinery tradition dates all the way back to 1937, when Bing Crosby escorted the first paying patron into the track, which was a lady who wore a hat. Mr. Crosby was one of the original founders of the Del Mar Race Track. The grand prize for the hat contest is a $10,000 spa visit.
Del Mar is one of the most beautiful race tracks in America. It is located on the Pacific Ocean in one of America’s lovliest towns. For more information, visit www.dtmc.com.
