Some of you may know a little about me from the blogs I write for Polly. My name is Anne and I have been interning with Polly for about a year. I am currently a senior at the University of Kentucky. I am majoring in Integrated Strategic Communications, which is a communications degree specialized in advertising. I am concentrating on Account Managment and am also working on a minor in Business. Interning with Polly has been a valuable and exciting experience. I wanted to be able to share some of my experiences and perks from working with an award-winning designer.
Working with Polly has been more than I had ever expected. I started interning for Polly by helping with her marketing. I began writing her monthly newsletter as well as writing for her blog. I also help her with her internet site, helping with up-keep and even naming a few of the hats and veils on her site. But I had no idea of the interesting and down-right fun things that were in store for me.
Here are just a few things I have done through out my internship. I have been able to be creative by actually working on hats; cuting straw, painting quills and working on veils. I have been able to work with clients by helping at Trunk Shows and in Polly’s studio. Trunk Shows have really been a blast, helping women find the perfect hat for themselves is so fun. It’s also rewarding when they find a hat that they really love, seeing people look great in their hats is so wonderful. I can’t forget to mention the great stores that we were able to have the shows at!
I have been able to model wedding veils, attend the Hats for Hope Auction in Louisville and learn about the day to day events of running your own business. One of the things that has been a great part of my internship, that I had no idea i would have the opportunity of doing, is starting a volunteering group. The Hat Ladies of Lexington has allowed me to see the inner workings of a group like this. It has been such a learning experience being the coordinator of a great group of women who share the same love of helping the community and the love of fashion.
Overall, Polly has taught me several things that go above and beyond what I believed any internship ever could teach.
- A job is more that a job, it should be a passion.
- You can give back to others around you in more ways than you think. Step outside the box, turn something that you love into a way to give back.
- Being patient, cultured and sincere will take you far in any business.
- Being cool and composed when things get hectic, is essential for any good business sense and your sanity.
- Hard work and a go-with-the-flow attitude go hand in hand.
