The Preakness Stakes, which follows the Kentucky Derby and precedes the Belmont Stakes, is the middle jewel of one of the most honored traditions in thoroughbred racing, The Triple Crown. This year the Preakness will be held on May 17 at Pimlico Race Track in Baltimore, the second oldest race track in the nation. Since its 1909 inception, the Preakness has grown in popularity. That is not the only thing that has grown, an ever increasing purse and Preakness traditions are always exciting.
Some traditions that have stayed with the race are the “painting of the colors” atop the weather vane in recognition of the winning horses colors. Some of the famous horses that have had their colors painted atop the vane include Man O’ War, Citation, and Affirmed. Other traditions of the Preakness are the drinking of The Black-Eyed-Susan, the Miss Preakness Contest, and the Preakness Celebration. The Black-eyed Susan is to the Preakness as the Mint Julep is to the Kentucky Derby. It is a tasty concoction of 2 parts bourbon, 1 part vodka citrus, 3 part sweet and sour mix, and 1 part orange juice, garnished with orange and a cocktail cherry.
Of course hats are as in any horse racing event, an absolute must! Some of the fashions for this years upcoming Preakness are as always, black and white, yellows and red and blue. If you are unable to attend the Preakness, make sure to watch it and see the great racing and the fabulous fashions.
