It was said that Isabella Blow was Phillip Treacy’s muse. She wore the most stunning hats and had the style to carry off the wildest of designs. Blow helped discover Treacy and introduced his designs to the fashionable. I too have my own muse of sorts and her name is Caroline.
Caroline and I met while I was in San Francisco and she was in Lexington. I was on vacation in San Francisco, in the middle of a strange dream. The phone rang and it was the kindest voice on the other end, chatting to me about hats! Caroline had always loved hats and we agreed to meet when I came back to KY.
Caroline and I quickly became friends. We had many of the same loves, those being England, Victoria, tea, vintage clothing, herbs and of course, hats. Caroline came over and worked with me, while I was designing. She brought tea and lunch to feed a hungry milliner. Not only did she feed my hunger for food, but also for feedback, ideas and inspiration. Caroline modeled for my website in the beginning, was featured on my business card and recommended me to stores. She even procured speaking engagements for me.
The best gift a person can give a designer is honesty. Caroline is never afraid to tell me what works and what doesn’t. Not every design makes it to the public. I do have my scary hats that no one will ever see!
Caroline continues to guide me today. She encouraged me to do the blog/hat chat. It’s been fun and hopefully, I’ve imparted some important hat tips that have helped someone.
