I didn’t always design hats for the Kentucky Derby. When I first started selling hats, they were mainly children’s hats.
While working at a previous job, someone gave me a card mentioning a Kentucky Derby Hat Show at a gallery in Louisville. I contacted that gallery and found out that the manager was a friend of my brother, Jon. Talk about a very small world. I took a few hats to the gallery and the rest is history, as they say. Through that gallery, my hats appeared on The Travel Channel and in a Visa Commercial.
What I love about designing Kentucky Derby hats is that you can really go all out. The bigger, the better. It really is fun. I find that designing a simple fedora is the hardest of all because it has to be simple. Give me a huge, crazy hat to design and it’s done in a heartbeat!

Christine,
What a great idea! A Tea/Hat party is always nice.
You may want to try http://www.judithm.com for the hats. I often have a few extra hats around, but not more than 5-6 plain natural straws that could be used for the party.
Let me know how it turns out.
